O-Level Chinese oral topics: the themes worth preparing

SEAB does not publish past oral topics and never has. What exists is what candidates and tuition centres wrote down afterwards. We gathered 72 of those recollections from 4 independent sources, grouped them, and show below both what they suggest and how far each one can be trusted — including the year we could find nothing for at all.

Reliable on theme. Approximate on wording.

Every question below is someone’s recollection, not a document. Where two or more independent sources agree, we say so; where only one source carries it, we say that too. Nobody can predict what SEAB will set, and this page does not try to. It shows the ground that has repeatedly been covered, which is a different and more useful thing.

There is nothing to practise on here yet.

What you can read today is the exam itself — the format, the marks and the published band descriptors, taken from the syllabus and cited. Practice is being built and will be here in time for the 2027 orals. This page will say so the day it opens, and not before.

Which themes come up most often?

Across 64 recalled 会话 questions, ten theme families account for all of them. The environment, technology and school life are the three largest, and each has appeared in at least four separate years.

Theme会话 questionsYears seenWhat it tends to ask
环保与资源The environment and resources96 (20192025)Whether one person's effort matters, and whether the answer is education or enforcement.
科技与数码生活Technology and digital life85 (20192024)Whether a technology does more good than harm, and who is left behind by it.

社区与邻里Community and neighbours75 (20212025)Whether Singaporeans look after each other enough, and what would change it.
传统与文化传承Tradition, heritage and change65 (20192025)What is worth preserving when preserving it has a cost.
家庭、敬老与关爱Family, elders and care64 (20192025)Where responsibility sits — with the family, or with everyone.
安全与治安Safety and public order63 (20212025)Whether people take a risk seriously enough before something goes wrong.
品格与价值观Character and personal values56 (20192025)Most of the recalled 朗读短文 passages sit here: a person, a hard thing, and what it shows.
健康与饮食Health and eating22 (20222024)Whether the responsibility is the individual's or the system's.
These families are ourgrouping of the recalled record, not SEAB’s. The syllabus publishes no topic list and no taxonomy. Treat them as a way to organise revision, not as a description of how the paper is set.

What shape does the 会话 question take?

Almost always an opinion on a social question — whether something does more good than harm, whether one person’s effort matters, where responsibility sits between the individual and everyone else. Descriptions are rare.

That shape is the reason topic memorisation disappoints. A candidate who has prepared a speech about recycling still has to answer whether enforcement or education would work better, and then say why. The syllabus itself points the same way: half the marks are for 个人意见和内容的组织— your own opinion and how you order it.

The practical consequence: prepare positions, not topics. For each theme below, a student who can say what they think, give a reason, and offer one concrete example from their own life is equipped for any question in that family. A student who has memorised a paragraph is equipped for one.

  • The environment and resources. Water, waste, litter, greenery, wildlife in a dense city, and what an individual can reasonably be expected to do about any of it.
  • Technology and digital life. Screens, phones, AI and robots at work, online behaviour, and older people brought into a digital world that did not ask them.
  • School, study and future paths. Where and how students study, uniforms, reading, leadership, holiday jobs, and the choice between academic and vocational routes.
  • Sport, CCAs and perseverance. Team sport, outdoor and adventure training, CCAs, and sport for people the rest of the field forgets.

Are the 朗读短文 passages about the same things?

No — and the difference is the most useful thing in this corpus. 6 of the 8 recalled reading passages are human-interest stories about a person, not the social-issue debates that fill the conversation.

The recalled passages include a deaf marine biologist who pursued her field anyway, a young man who had been in trouble and became a physiotherapist, an employer who went to considerable lengths for her domestic helper, and a piece on why listening properly matters. These are narratives with a person at the centre and a point at the end.

If that pattern holds, reading practice on argumentative or expository text is practising the wrong register. A story needs a reader who can shift pace at the turn and let a sentence land — which is what 语速、语调和流利度, one of the two strands the reading is judged on, is describing.

This is the thinnest evidence on the page: 8 recalled passages in total, most of them single-sourced, because people remember the question they had to answer far better than the passage they read. Treat it as a hint about register, not a finding.

How good is the evidence, year by year?

Uneven, and worth seeing before you rely on any of it. 4 of the 8 years have at least one theme carried by two or more independent sources; the earlier years rest on a single compiler; 2026 has nothing we could verify at all.

YearTopics recordedTwo or more sourcesHow far to trust it

20207Single compiler only — indicative, not established.

20231310Themes corroborated across independent sources.
202497Themes corroborated across independent sources.

2026Nothing published that we could find.

The 2026 row is the one we would most like to fill and cannot. The orals were sat in July; when this corpus was gathered, no recall we could verify had been published. We would rather show an empty row than quietly start the table at a year that flatters us.

What have candidates actually been asked?

Below is the corroborated part of the record — the questions where two or more independent sources agreed. Wording is as recalled, so read it for the substance of the question rather than for the exact phrasing.

Higher Chinese candidates sit a different paper — an oral report and a discussion rather than a reading and a conversation — and some of the recalled questions above are from that paper. The format page sets out which paper is which.

Where did these come from?

4 independent sources: post-exam recall published by tuition centres, compilers’ blogs and parent forums in the days after each July sitting. A theme is marked as corroborated only when two sources that are genuinely independent of each other carry it.

Two pages from the same publisher count once. One page quoting another counts once. School preliminary-exam questions are excluded entirely — they circulate under titles that often omit the word “prelim”, and mixing them with national-exam recall would quietly corrupt both records.

We also inspected the topic lists that circulate without any stated source. Where a list gives no provenance at all, we have not reproduced it and have not counted it.

Common questions

Does SEAB publish past O-Level Chinese oral topics?
No, and it never has. There is no past-year oral paper to buy or download. Everything anyone publishes — including this page — is recalled by candidates, parents and tuition centres after the exam, so it is reliable on theme and approximate on exact wording.
Can you predict what will come up in the Chinese oral?
No, and nobody can. What this page does is different: it shows which themes have recurred across 7 years of recalled questions, so preparation covers ground that has repeatedly been asked about rather than guessing at one topic.
What kind of question is the 会话 actually asking?
In this corpus, almost always an opinion on a social question — whether something does more good than harm, whether one person's effort matters, where responsibility sits. Very few are descriptions. A memorised speech does not survive the follow-up.
Are the 朗读短文 passages about the same topics?
No, and the difference is striking. 6 of the 8 recalled reading passages are human-interest stories about a person — someone who overcame something, or showed unexpected kindness — rather than the social-issue debates that dominate the conversation.
Why is there nothing here for 2026?
Because we could not find it. The 2026 orals were sat in July and, as of when this corpus was gathered, no recall had been published or indexed that we could verify. Rather than leave a silent gap, the page says so.
