What has the O-Level Chinese 会话 asked about community and neighbours?

The recalled record for 社区与邻里, which parts rest on one source, and how to prepare from a student's own estate.

In short

Our 社区与邻里 (community and neighbours) group holds 7 recalled O-Level Chinese 会话 themes from 2021 to 2025; for 3, more than one independent source agrees. They cover neighbours, courtesy in shared spaces, community projects and volunteering, and the most recent recalled set moves from how it feels to be helped, to what young volunteers gain, to whether volunteering should expect anything back. These are candidates' memories of past papers, gathered because SEAB lists no oral topics; they describe what was asked, not what will be.

Which community questions have come up in the O-Level Chinese 会话?

We hold 7 community themes recalled for the O-Level / SEC G3 Chinese oral (1160 / K320), from 5 different years. 3 have two or more independent sources behind them, and 4 have one. No Higher Chinese row falls in this group. They are listed below from the earliest; the one surviving set of wordings keeps the source's own punctuation.

(Mutual respect; community care) · one source only. Theme only; no wording was recalled.
(Community gardens & mentorship) · one source only. Theme only; no wording was recalled.
(Respect for others) · one source only. Theme only; no wording was recalled.
(Gracious society (seat-hogging)) · one source only. Theme only; no wording was recalled.
(Neighbourhood relations) · two independent sources agree. Theme only; no wording was recalled.
(Community art / murals) · two independent sources agree. Theme only; no wording was recalled.
(Volunteer work) · two independent sources agree.

How reliable is this list?

Less than the count suggests, and worth saying plainly. The 4 single-source rows include every row before 2023, so the corroborated part of this group is recent: 2023, 2024, 2025. With no past oral paper released by SEAB, each row is someone's account after the exam, drawn from 3 recall sources in all; for 2026 we found no account at all. Putting these rows together as "community" is our choice, not SEAB's. Method and the other themes: the O-Level Chinese oral topics page.

What do community questions actually ask?

We sort the 7 themes into four angles of our own:

  • Neighbours. The 邻里关系 row: whether people still know and look out for the people next door.
  • Courtesy in shared spaces. The 礼让社会(占位现象) row on seat-hogging, and the 2021 rows on respect: everyday behaviour where people share space.
  • Doing something together. The 社区花园与师徒关系 and 社区艺术(壁画) rows: shared projects, and what they do for the people who take part.
  • Volunteering. The 做义工 row, the only one of the 7 with recalled wording.

The volunteering row is worth a closer look, because it shows the shape a set of 会话 questions can take. As recalled, the three questions move from a feeling (imagine being the person helped), to a benefit (what do teenagers gain), to a statement to judge (volunteering should not expect a return). Only the third is a plain opinion question. On our topics page, the group's question reads: "Whether Singaporeans look after each other enough, and what would change it."

How should a student prepare the community theme?

Our guidance: start from the student's own block, not from a speech. 附录C's top band describes a candidate who 举例说明 (illustrates with examples) while extending a view. Every student has neighbours, lifts and shared tables nearby, so the examples are close to hand; the preparation is noticing them. On each angle, test whether the student can tell you, in their own Chinese:

  1. Whether they agree with the angle's claim (that neighbours look out for each other less than before, for instance), and where they would qualify it.
  2. A reason that adds something, not the same reason in new words.
  3. One real example: a neighbour, a void deck, a lift, a hawker centre table, a volunteering session, with a who, a when and a detail.
  4. What someone who disagrees would point to, and their response.

Questions to try at home (ours, not model answers): are neighbours more distant than before, or just busier, and what is the difference? Is holding a seat for someone in a crowded place rude, or reasonable? What does a mural or a garden do that a notice cannot? Should volunteering ever be rewarded, and does compulsory volunteering still count? What would it feel like to be on the receiving end of help?

Worked example · Planning an answer to a recalled question

The question

The 2025 wording as recalled (theme corroborated), punctuation and all. Rendered in English: some people think volunteers should not ask for anything in return. What do you think?

A weaker answer

Plan: "I agree. Volunteering is about helping others, so we should not ask for anything back. Helping others makes us happy." A position and a reason, then a restatement.

A stronger answer

Plan: agree with the principle, then ask what counts as a return: money, a certificate, a good feeling, a skill. Use a real session the student did and what they actually got out of it. Then the other side: if a small reward brings more people in, is that wrong? Close on the line the student would draw.

What changed

  • The stronger plan questions the statement's key word (回报, a return) instead of agreeing with it as a slogan.
  • It weighs the other side and returns with a judgement, which is our reading of 扩展个人看法.
  • The example is a real session with a detail, matching 举例说明 in the descriptor. Written in English, the plan leaves the Chinese wording to the student on the day.

Our worked 邻里关系 answers, one strong and one middling, with the descriptor wording tagged line by line, are on a 等级 1 会话 answer beside a 等级 3 one. Why some community answers stay in the middle band is the subject of common mistakes in the 会话, measured against 附录C.

Common questions

Has community come up in the O-Level Chinese oral?

Candidates recall it in 5 years (2021 to 2025), 7 themes in all, though only 3 are confirmed by two independent sources. There is no SEAB list of past topics to compare with.

What were the recalled volunteering questions?

As recalled for 2025 (two sources agree on the theme; the wording was recalled after the exam and is not SEAB's text): 如果你是接受义工帮助的人,你会有什么感受? / 青少年参与义工服务会有什么收获? / 有人认为做义工不应要求回报,你怎么看? They are printed uncorrected, and they describe what was asked that year, not what will be asked again.

What if my child has never volunteered?

Then use something they have done or seen instead of inventing a session. A school activity, helping a neighbour or an older relative, or being helped themselves can all carry a view. Our concern with an invented example is that it rarely has the who, when and detail that make it illustrate anything.
