What has the O-Level Chinese 会话 asked about tradition and heritage?

The recalled record for 传统与文化传承, why it is thinner than the other themes, and how to prepare it anyway.

Updated 10 October 2026 · Exam facts checked against SEAB on 13 September 2026 · 6 min read

In short

Only 2 of the 4 O-Level Chinese 会话 themes we group as 传统与文化传承 (tradition, heritage and change), recalled between 2019 and 2024, have two independent sources behind them. In our reading they weigh the old against the new: conserved estates, hawker culture, a previous generation's way of life, and what is worth keeping when keeping it has a cost. Because SEAB lists no oral topics, all of this is recall, thin recall at that, and none of it points to a future paper.

Which heritage questions have come up in the O-Level Chinese 会话?

4 heritage themes have been recalled for the O-Level / SEC G3 Chinese oral (1160 / K320), drawn from 4 different years. Just 2 are backed by two or more independent sources; 2 rely on one. 2 keep a recalled wording, shown as the source gave it, without our corrections. The rows, by year:

  • 2019 · 受保留的旧住宅区 (Conserved/heritage housing estates) · one source only. Recalled wording: “受保留的住宅区会影响新加坡的发展。谈谈你的看法”
  • 2022 · 传统旧式对比现代化 (Traditional/old ways vs. modernisation) · one source only. Theme only; no wording was recalled.
  • 2023 · 小贩文化 (Hawker culture) · two independent sources agree. Recalled wording: “你认为保护小贩传统重要吗?”
  • 2024 · 上一代生活对比现代生活(古董店/怀旧) (A previous generation's life vs. modern life (antique shops / nostalgia)) · two independent sources agree. Theme only; no wording was recalled.

A further 2 heritage rows come from the Higher Chinese record. They belong to a separate oral with a report and a discussion (see the Higher Chinese oral), which is why they sit apart from the count above:

  • 2023 · 现代年轻人庆祝特别节日越来越商业化 (Modern young people's celebration of special festivals is increasingly commercialised) · two independent sources agree. Theme only; no wording was recalled.
  • 2025 · 保留历史铁路遗迹 (Preserving heritage railway sites) · one source only. Theme only; no wording was recalled.

How reliable is this list?

Less than any of our other Chinese theme pages, and that should shape how much weight it gets. Only 2 G3 Chinese rows are corroborated (2023 and 2024); the other 2 rely on one source each. Every row is a recollection set down after an exam whose papers SEAB does not release, from 2 recall sources in all, and the record is empty for 2026. The heritage grouping is ours. What the record does show is that the theme has been recalled in 4 separate years. The other themes, and how we gathered them: the O-Level Chinese oral topics page.

What do heritage questions actually ask?

Whether something old is worth its cost, in our reading. The topics page phrases it as "What is worth preserving when preserving it has a cost." We sort the rows into three angles (our grouping, not SEAB's):

  • Preservation against development. The 受保留的旧住宅区 row, whose single-source recalled wording frames conserved estates as something that affects Singapore's development, and the railway row in the Higher Chinese record.
  • A living tradition. The 小贩文化 row, recalled as asking whether protecting the hawker tradition is important.
  • Then and now. The 传统旧式对比现代化 and 上一代生活对比现代生活(古董店/怀旧) rows: an older way of life set beside a modern one, and what nostalgia is for. The Higher Chinese row on festivals becoming commercial belongs here too.

How should a student prepare the heritage theme?

Our guidance: find the family's own history first, then the position. 附录C's top band links a view to an example (扩展个人看法,并举例说明). For this theme an example can come from an older relative, which is a reason to ask them before the exam rather than invent something during it. Then, angle by angle, see whether the student can explain in their own Chinese:

  1. Whether this particular thing is worth keeping, and what cost would change their mind.
  2. A reason beyond "it is part of our culture".
  3. One real example: a stall the family has gone to for years, a grandparent's account of how things were, a place that has changed, with a who, a when and a detail.
  4. The strongest case for letting it go, and their answer.

Prompts we suggest for practice (ours, not model answers): what exactly is being preserved when a tradition is protected: a building, a food, a skill, or the people who carry it on? Who pays for preservation, and who benefits? Is nostalgia useful, or only comfortable? If young people do not want to take over a traditional trade, should anyone try to change that, and how?

Worked example · Planning an answer to a recalled question

The question

你认为保护小贩传统重要吗?

Recalled for 2023 (corroborated theme), uncorrected. What it asks, in English: do you think it is important to protect the hawker tradition?

A weaker answer

Plan: "Yes. Hawker food is cheap and delicious, and it is part of our culture, so we should protect it." Three reasons in a row, none developed, no example and no other side.

A stronger answer

Plan: yes, and then say what the tradition actually is: not only the food but the people and skills behind it. A real example: a stall the family has eaten at for years and what the student knows about the person who runs it. Then the difficulty: protecting it means someone has to want the work. Close on what the student thinks would help.

What changed

  • The stronger plan defines the key word (传统, the tradition) before defending it, so the answer has something to develop.
  • It faces the hardest objection to its own view, which in our reading is what extends a view (扩展个人看法).
  • The example belongs to this student's family, an illustration only they can give (举例说明). As with every plan on these pages, it is in English: the student finds the Chinese.

The descriptor: “能根据话题进行讨论,扩展个人看法,并举例说明” — SEAB syllabus K320 (G3 Chinese Language), 附录C, p.10

Two worked 会话 answers in full Chinese, one top-band and one middle-band, are on a 等级 1 会话 answer beside a 等级 3 one; neither is about heritage, but the same moves apply. What holds a 会话 answer at 等级 3 is set out in common mistakes in the 会话, measured against 附录C.

Common questions

Has heritage come up in the O-Level Chinese oral?

Recall says so, but thinly: 4 themes in 4 years, only 2 of them named by two independent sources. SEAB keeps no public list of past oral topics.

Why is the heritage record thinner than the other themes?

We can only say what it holds, not why. 2 of its 4 G3 rows rest on a single source, and the corroborated ones come from 2023 and 2024. The 2 Higher Chinese rows add context but belong to a different exam.

My child has no family stories about the old days. What then?

Use what they have seen: a place in their neighbourhood that has changed, a festival as their family celebrates it, a food stall they know. Our view: an invented story is hard to fill with the who, when and detail that 举例说明 implies.
