会话 worked answers: what a top-band answer sounds like next to a middle-band one

Two scenarios below, each with the same three-question sequence answered twice: once at 等级 1, once at 等级 3. The gap between them is not fluency or correctness — both answers are grammatical and on topic throughout. It is content: whether a view is extended and illustrated, and how much of the conversation the candidate is carrying without being asked.

There is nothing to practise on here yet.

What you can read today is the exam itself — the format, the marks and the published band descriptors, taken from the syllabus and cited. Practice is being built and will be here in time for the 2027 orals. This page will say so the day it opens, and not before.

The themes are real — both scenarios on this page are corroborated rows in the recalled question corpus, from 2023 and 2024. The exact wording of every question is ours, written in the shape the recalled wordings take. SEAB does not publish past oral questions, and presenting invented wording as though it were a past paper is exactly the kind of claim this cluster exists to avoid making.

Is the middle-band 等级 3 answer on this page a bad answer?

Every sentence in each middle-band answer below is correct, fluent and on topic — nothing in it is careless or wrong. What caps the band is structural: each turn stops after the first reason, an example arrives only once the examiner asks for one, and in the second scenario the candidate answers a related question rather than the one actually asked. A fluent, correct, thin answer is a genuine 等级 3 answer, and seeing exactly what "thin" looks like is the most useful thing on this page.

Why do only the middle-band answers show what the examiner asked?

The middle-band turns below show what the examiner had to ask and what the candidate said next; the top-band turns show neither, because nothing was needed. That contrast is 个人意见和内容的组织 itself, made visible rather than asserted — the rubric's own words are "能跟主考员自然、流利地交谈,无需主考员的引导" at the top band against "在引导下,才能跟主考员进行交谈" here.

If an answer scores 等级 3 on content, does it score 等级 3 on language too?

Both answers in a pair are written to the same band on both criteria, but the two do not cap together. Each answer's "why this band" below explains that a clean, error-free response like these can sit at the top of one band on 语文表达和流利度 while a different band on 个人意见和内容的组织 is what actually decides the mark — content is the criterion doing the capping here, not language.

Read each answer’s “why this band” below for the specific case — it says, every time, which criterion is doing the capping and where the other one would sit if it were marked alone. For the full band-by-band descriptors behind both criteria, see how 会话 is marked.

Can a written answer on this page show pronunciation or fluency?

语文表达和流利度 covers sound as well as vocabulary: the rubric's top band asks for "语音准确,语调自然流利,说话清楚" and its 等级 3 band for "语音还算准确,语调还算自然,说话有时会迟疑". A transcript cannot demonstrate either. Every annotation on this page that touches 语文表达和流利度 is about vocabulary range and sentence variety only — nothing here claims to show how an answer would have sounded.

Scenario 1 · 社区与邻里 (Community and neighbours)

邻里关系 Neighbourhood relations

Recalled as a corroborated theme in 2023. The stimulus below and the three questions that follow are our own wording, in the shape recalled questions take — see the recalled-topics page for the corpus itself.

Top band — 等级 1(16–20分)

等级 1(16–20分)

Question 1

Question 2

Question 3

What’s doing the work

  • 我会。邻居就住在隔壁,关系好不好,直接影响我们每天的生活。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 能根据话题发表意见: the opinion is stated in the first two words and the reason follows immediately. Nothing is spent restating the question.

  • 隔壁的马来邻居第一天就过来教我们垃圾槽怎么用、附近哪个巴刹比较便宜

个人意见和内容的组织 — 举例说明: a concrete personal example with a who (the neighbour), a when (day one) and two specific details. This is what separates 举例说明 from a generic 比如.

  • The shape of it

    最简单的是……再进一步……不过我认为最重要的还是……

个人意见和内容的组织 — 讲述清楚、详尽、有条理: the three suggestions are ordered from smallest to most important, and the ordering is signposted without a mechanical 第一、第二、第三.

  • The shape of it

    我只同意一半……不过我不认为新加坡人变得冷漠了。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 扩展个人看法: the candidate concedes the true part of the statement, then rebuts the rest with evidence. Concession-and-rebuttal is the clearest sign of a view being extended rather than repeated.

  • 关系疏远是因为生活方式改变了,不是因为大家不在乎。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 有条理: the third turn closes with a one-line summary that distinguishes cause from character. The conversation sustains itself to a natural end — 无需主考员的引导.

  • The shape of it

    疏远 / 冷漠 / 跨出第一步 / 在乎

语文表达和流利度 — 用词丰富、适当: vocabulary sits at a Secondary 3–4 level and is used precisely (疏远 for distance, 冷漠 for indifference — the answer turns on the difference). 语句有变化: statements, a contrast (以前……现在……), a conditional (只要……), a rhetorical opener (我只同意一半). What this text cannot show is the 语音 / 语调 strand of the same criterion.

Why this band

On 个人意见和内容的组织 every 等级 1 (16–20) descriptor is met: an opinion is given at once (能根据话题发表意见,内容丰富), each turn extends the view and backs it with a specific personal example (扩展个人看法,并举例说明), and the third turn concedes and rebuts, which is the fullest form of 讲述清楚、详尽、有条理. No examiner prompt is needed at any point — 无需主考员的引导 — which is the line that separates 等级 1 from 等级 2 (偶尔需要引导). On 语文表达和流利度 the written text shows 用词丰富、适当,语句有变化; the 语音准确,语调自然流利 strand is about delivery and is not something a transcript can demonstrate.

Self-check

  • 我有没有在第一句就说出自己的看法,而不是先重复主考员的问题?
  • 我的看法有没有往下扩展——说了“为什么”,还说了“不过”或“另一方面”?
  • 我举的例子有没有人物、地点和经过,还是换成任何人都可以说?
  • 我说的内容有没有条理:先看法,再理由,然后例子,最后一句总结?
  • 主考员如果不追问,我能不能自己把话说完整,说到一个自然的结尾?

For parents

Listen for two things. First, whether your child's answer keeps going on its own — the examiner should not have to ask "why?" or "anything else?" to get more; a top answer supplies its own reasons and its own example without being pulled. Second, whether the example is specific enough that it could only be your family's: a named neighbour, a real incident, a detail. "Neighbours help each other" is a sentence anyone could say; "our neighbour showed us where the rubbish chute was on our first day" is evidence.

Middle band — 等级 3(6–10分)

等级 3(6–10分)

Question 1

短片中的陈阿姨主动关心新搬来的邻居。你会像她一样主动跟邻居打交道吗?为什么?

我会,因为邻居住得很近,有什么事可以互相帮忙。如果我们对邻居好,邻居也会对我们好。像陈阿姨这样很热心,我觉得很好。

The examiner had to prompt

你自己有没有跟邻居打交道的经验?

What followed

有。我们跟隔壁的邻居见面会打招呼,有时候过年会送橘子给他们。他们人很好。

Question 2

你认为我们可以怎样做,才能跟邻居建立良好的关系?

我觉得我们可以主动跟邻居打招呼,也可以在邻居需要帮助的时候帮助他们。比如邻居搬东西,我们可以帮忙搬。这样邻居就会喜欢我们,我们的关系就会好。

The examiner had to prompt

除了帮忙,还有什么?

What followed

还可以参加社区的活动,比如国庆日的晚餐,这样可以认识更多邻居。

Question 3

有人说,现在的新加坡人跟邻居的关系越来越疏远。请谈谈你的看法。

我同意。现在很多人都很忙,回到家就关门,很少跟邻居说话。而且现在大家都用手机,有空的时候就看手机,不跟邻居聊天。所以我觉得现在的人跟邻居的关系比较疏远。

The examiner had to prompt

那你觉得这个情况可以改变吗?

What followed

可以。如果大家主动一点,关系就会好一点。

What’s doing the work

  • 我会,因为邻居住得很近,有什么事可以互相帮忙。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 能根据话题发表意见,内容简单: the opinion is there and it is relevant. It is one reason, stated once, at the level of a general truth. Nothing wrong with it; nothing more in it.

  • 有时候过年会送橘子给他们。他们人很好。

个人意见和内容的组织 — the example only arrives after the examiner asks for one (在引导下,才能跟主考员进行交谈), and when it comes it is generic: no incident, no detail, and it ends on 他们人很好, which is a feeling, not evidence.

  • 这样邻居就会喜欢我们,我们的关系就会好。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 无法进一步扩展个人看法: the second turn lists two actions and then closes with a result that follows from nothing in particular. There is no 'most important', no ordering, no difficulty considered — compare the top answer's 沟通 point.

  • The shape of it

    我同意。……所以我觉得现在的人跟邻居的关系比较疏远。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 讲述还算清楚,但是不够详尽: the third turn agrees, gives two plausible causes (busyness, phones), and then restates the question as its conclusion. No concession, no other side, no example — the view is stated but never tested.

  • 如果大家主动一点,关系就会好一点。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 在引导下: this is the candidate's whole response to a prompt that invited a full extension. One conditional sentence, then silence. The examiner is carrying the conversation.

  • The shape of it

    如果……就…… / 这样……就…… / 也可以……

语文表达和流利度 — 用词还算适当,语句有一点变化: the vocabulary is correct and ordinary (好, 忙, 帮忙, 热心), and one sentence frame does most of the work. Nothing here is wrong. 语音 and 迟疑 cannot be judged from text; in this criterion the cap on the page is about range, not accuracy.

Why this band

On 个人意见和内容的组织 this answer matches the 等级 3 (6–10) descriptors line by line: 能根据话题发表意见,内容简单 (an opinion with one general reason each turn), 无法进一步扩展个人看法 (each turn stops after the first idea, and the follow-up to a prompt is a single sentence), 讲述还算清楚,但是不够详尽 (clear, relevant, generic), and 在引导下,才能跟主考员进行交谈 (the example, the extra suggestion and the counter-view each arrive only after the examiner asks). On 语文表达和流利度 the written text shows 用词还算适当,语句有一点变化 — correct and plain, with one sentence frame repeated. It would sit at the upper end of the band; there are no errors of the kind 等级 4 describes (有时还有语病), and a marker generous on language could place that criterion at the bottom of 等级 2 (11–15). The content criterion is the one holding it here.

Self-check

  • 主考员问了“为什么”或“还有呢”之后,我才想到更多内容吗?如果是,那部分本来就应该在我的第一次回答里。
  • 我的例子是不是太笼统,换成任何人都可以说?有没有一个人、一个地方、一件真的发生过的事?
  • 我是不是每一句都用同样的句型(“如果……就……”、“这样……就……”)?
  • 我有没有考虑到另一面的看法,还是只说了同意或不同意?
  • 说完第一句看法之后,我还能不能自己再说三句?

For parents

This answer is not a weak one and your child may well be giving answers like it: it is correct, on topic and confident. What caps it is that it stops. Each time, the examiner has to ask "any experience of your own?" or "anything else?" before there is more, and what comes is one more sentence. Listen for whether the example is real and particular, and for whether your child says "but" or "on the other hand" at any point — a view that is only ever one-sided has not been extended.

Scenario 2 · 科技与数码生活 (Technology and digital life)

年长者迈入数码时代 Elderly people entering the digital age

Recalled as a corroborated theme in 2024. The stimulus below and the three questions that follow are our own wording, in the shape recalled questions take — see the recalled-topics page for the corpus itself.

Top band — 等级 1(16–20分)

等级 1(16–20分)

Question 1

Question 2

Question 3

What’s doing the work

  • 排队的人不耐烦,我明白,可是老伯伯不是故意的

个人意见和内容的组织 — 扩展个人看法: the candidate acknowledges the other people in the clip before taking a side. The opinion is not just stated; it is placed against the obvious objection.

  • The shape of it

    对我们来说……几秒钟的事,对他来说却是一个完全陌生的世界。

语文表达和流利度 — 语句有变化: a balanced contrast sentence (对……来说……对……来说却……) that does argumentative work. The text can show sentence variety; it cannot show the 语音 / 语调 strand.

  • The shape of it

    我的公公去年也遇到过同样的情况,在巴刹想用手机付款……最后很不好意思地换回现金

个人意见和内容的组织 — 举例说明: a personal example with a person, a place, a sequence and an outcome. The detail 很不好意思地换回现金 is what makes it an incident rather than a category.

  • 从家里和社区两方面来做

个人意见和内容的组织 — 讲述清楚、详尽、有条理: the second turn announces its two-part structure in one clause and then keeps to it. The listener always knows where the answer is.

  • 问题是很多乐龄人士不知道,或者不敢去。所以我认为,除了开课,更重要的是有人陪他们去第一次。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 扩展个人看法: the candidate goes past the obvious suggestion (run classes) to the reason it fails and a better one. This is the move a 内容简单 answer never makes.

  • 当然,我们不应该逼他们,可是不勉强,不等于不教。

个人意见和内容的组织 — concession then rebuttal, in a single sentence, on the exact word the statement used (勉强). The third turn then ends on its own conclusion without a prompt — 无需主考员的引导.

Why this band

On 个人意见和内容的组织 the answer meets every 等级 1 (16–20) descriptor: the opinion is immediate and reasoned (能根据话题发表意见,内容丰富), each turn extends beyond the first idea and grounds it in a specific family example (扩展个人看法,并举例说明 — 公公 in the first two turns, 婆婆 in the third), the second turn is explicitly structured (讲述清楚、详尽、有条理), and the third turn concedes 不应该逼他们 before rebutting, closing on its own. No 引导 is needed anywhere, which is the discriminator against 等级 2 (偶尔需要引导). On 语文表达和流利度 the text shows 用词丰富、适当 (陌生, 排除在外, 勉强 turned back on the question) and 语句有变化 (contrast, rhetorical question, conditional); the 语音准确,语调自然流利 strand is delivery and is not demonstrable in a transcript.

Self-check

  • 我有没有在第一句就表明立场,然后马上说出理由?
  • 题目里如果有一个关键词(比如“勉强”),我有没有针对这个词来回答,而不是泛泛而谈?
  • 我举的例子是不是自己家里或身边真的发生过的事,有人物、有地点、有结果?
  • 我有没有先承认对方说得对的部分,再说出我不同意的地方?
  • 主考员不追问的话,我能不能自己把三个问题都说到一个自然的结尾?

For parents

The examiner's third question here is a deliberate provocation — "old people cannot learn technology, so do not force them". Listen for whether your child engages with the actual word used (force) rather than just disagreeing in general, and whether they can grant the reasonable half (do not push people) before rejecting the rest (that is not the same as not teaching). Then listen for a real person: a grandparent, a real moment at a market or a clinic. If the answer could be given by a child who has never taught anyone anything, it has not given an example.

Middle band — 等级 3(6–10分)

等级 3(6–10分)

Question 1

短片中的中学生主动教老伯伯用手机付款。如果你是他,你会这样做吗?为什么?

我会,因为老伯伯不会用手机付款,很可怜。如果我教他,他就可以学会,以后就不用麻烦别人了。而且帮助乐龄人士是应该的。

The examiner had to prompt

为什么你觉得是应该的?

What followed

因为他们年纪大了,我们年轻人应该尊敬他们,帮助他们。

Question 2

你认为我们可以怎样帮助乐龄人士适应数码时代?

我觉得年轻人可以教家里的乐龄人士用手机,比如教他们怎样打电话、怎样付款。政府也可以开一些课程,让乐龄人士去学。这样他们就可以学会用手机了。

The examiner had to prompt

你有没有教过家里的长辈用手机?

What followed

有。我教过我的奶奶用手机拍照。她学会了,很开心。

Question 3

有人说,年纪大的人学不会新科技,不必勉强他们。请谈谈你的看法。

我不同意。我觉得年纪大的人也可以学会新科技,只是他们需要更多时间。如果我们不教他们,他们就会跟不上时代,生活会很不方便。所以我们应该教他们。

The examiner had to prompt

有些老人家真的不想学,怎么办?

What followed

那我们可以慢慢鼓励他们,告诉他们学会了有什么好处。

What’s doing the work

  • 我会,因为老伯伯不会用手机付款,很可怜。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 能根据话题发表意见,内容简单: an opinion with a reason, but the reason is a reaction (很可怜) rather than a thought. The top answer's 他只是没有人教过他 is the same sympathy, turned into a point.

  • 而且帮助乐龄人士是应该的。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 无法进一步扩展个人看法: the turn ends on a general principle it does not explain. When the examiner asks why, the reply (年纪大了,应该尊敬他们) is the same principle restated — the view does not move.

  • 政府也可以开一些课程,让乐龄人士去学。这样他们就可以学会用手机了。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 不够详尽: the suggestion is the obvious one and stops at it. There is no sense of why classes might not be enough, which is exactly where the top answer went next.

  • 我教过我的奶奶用手机拍照。她学会了,很开心。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 在引导下,才能跟主考员进行交谈: the example exists but has to be asked for, and it is two sentences with no difficulty, no step, no detail. Real, but not developed.

  • 如果我们不教他们,他们就会跟不上时代,生活会很不方便。所以我们应该教他们。

个人意见和内容的组织 — 讲述还算清楚,但是不够详尽: the third turn disagrees and gives a sensible consequence, but never touches the statement's key word 勉强, and offers no concession. It has answered 'should we teach the elderly?' rather than 'should we make them learn?'.

  • The shape of it

    如果……就…… / 这样……就…… / 所以我们应该……

语文表达和流利度 — 用词还算适当,语句有一点变化: correct, plain vocabulary (可怜, 方便, 开心) and one conditional frame doing most of the work. No errors. 语音 and hesitation are not visible in text; the cap the page can show on this criterion is range.

Why this band

On 个人意见和内容的组织 the 等级 3 (6–10) descriptors fit exactly: 能根据话题发表意见,内容简单 (a stance and one reason per turn), 无法进一步扩展个人看法 (a prompt for 'why' produces a restatement, a prompt for 'what if they refuse' produces one sentence), 讲述还算清楚,但是不够详尽 (clear, relevant, and thin — the third turn does not engage the word 勉强), and 在引导下,才能跟主考员进行交谈 (the personal example appears only when asked for). On 语文表达和流利度 the text shows 用词还算适当,语句有一点变化; there are no 语病, so as with the first scenario a marker could place this criterion at the low end of 等级 2 (11–15). The content criterion is what fixes the band.

Self-check

  • 我说“应该”或“很可怜”的时候,有没有接着说出一个真正的理由?
  • 题目里的关键词(比如“勉强”)我有没有回应到,还是回答了一个比较简单的问题?
  • 我的例子有没有过程——教了什么、哪里难、后来怎样——还是只有一句“她学会了”?
  • 主考员问“怎么办”或“为什么”的时候,我是不是只用一句话回答就停了?
  • 我有没有说过一次“当然……可是……”,承认对方有道理的部分?

For parents

Your child will probably recognise this answer — it is the shape most sensible answers take before they are trained to go further. Every reason is right and every sentence is correct, but the examiner has to keep asking, and each prompt gets one more sentence. Listen for the moment your child says "it is right to help the elderly" and check whether anything follows it; listen for whether the example about teaching a grandparent has any actual steps in it; and listen for whether the third answer notices the difference between teaching someone and forcing them, because that difference is the whole question.

Common questions

Are the questions on this page real past O-Level Chinese oral questions?
