朗读短文: what the rubric actually rewards

朗读短文 is 10 marks of the 50-mark Chinese oral — 5% of the Chinese Language subject, K320 (formerly 1160). It is graded on one scale, described by two strands, and the syllabus is specific about what each strand is asking for. Everything below is read off SEAB’s own band descriptors and the recalled record of past passages, cited as it goes.

There is nothing to practise on here yet.

What you can read today is the exam itself — the format, the marks and the published band descriptors, taken from the syllabus and cited. Practice is being built and will be here in time for the 2027 orals. This page will say so the day it opens, and not before.

How many marks is 朗读短文 worth, and how is that mark shaped?

10 marks — 5% of Chinese Language, and 10 of the 50 marks in the oral paper. It is one scale, not two: SEAB describes it with two strands, 语音和清晰度 (sound and clarity) and 语速、语调和流利度 (pace, intonation and fluency), but a candidate receives one mark out of 10, not a mark for each strand.

Band语音和清晰度sound and clarity语速、语调和流利度pace, intonation and fluency
等级 1 (9–10)
  • 语音准确accurate pronunciation
  • 语音清晰clear pronunciation
  • 语速适中,有节奏感an even pace, with a sense of rhythm
  • 语调自然,有变化natural intonation, with variation
  • 流利连贯,停顿适当fluent and coherent, with appropriate pauses
等级 2 (6–8)
  • 语音相当准确,有一点错误fairly accurate pronunciation, with minor errors
  • 语音相当清晰fairly clear pronunciation
  • 语速相当适中,有一定的节奏感a fairly even pace, with some sense of rhythm
  • 语调相当自然,有适当的变化fairly natural intonation, with appropriate variation
  • 相当流利连贯,停顿相当适当fairly fluent and coherent, with fairly appropriate pauses
等级 3 (3–5)
  • 语音还算准确,有一些错误reasonably accurate pronunciation, with some errors
  • 语音还算清晰,能达意,某些语音难以识别reasonably clear — meaning gets across, though some sounds are hard to make out
  • 语速还算适中,有一点节奏感a reasonably even pace, with a little rhythm
  • 语调还算自然,偶尔有变化reasonably natural intonation, with occasional variation
  • 还算流利,不过停顿比较多reasonably fluent, though with more pauses
等级 4 (1–2)
  • 语音不准确,有很多错误inaccurate pronunciation, with many errors
  • 语音不清晰unclear pronunciation
  • 语速不适中,语气感情差,没有节奏感an uneven pace, poor tone and feeling, no sense of rhythm
  • 语调不自然,没有变化unnatural intonation, no variation
  • 不流利,不连贯,一再停顿not fluent, not coherent, with repeated pauses
K320 numbers its firstband as the top one — 等级 1 is 9–10 marks, and 等级 4 is the bottom, at 1–2. That is the opposite convention from the English oral’s bands, where Band 5 is top. A bare “band 1” means nothing without the mark range next to it, which is why every band above is shown with its marks.

Can a beautifully pronounced reading miss the top band?

Yes, if it is halting. 等级 1asks for both strands at once — accurate, clear sound and an even pace with natural intonation and appropriate pauses. The descriptors do not offer a trade: a reading cannot bank marks on one strand to cover a weak showing on the other.

Read the top and bottom bands side by side. 等级 1 pairs 语音准确,语音清晰 with 流利连贯,停顿适当. 等级 4 pairs 语音不准确,有很多错误 with 不流利,不连贯,一再停顿. Both descriptions move together, band by band, all the way down. A reading that is clearly pronounced but stop-start, or fluent but indistinct, sits between bands rather than qualifying for either extreme — which is a fact about how the scale is written, not our interpretation of it.

Practically, that means the two strands are not two things to practise separately and hope one covers for the other. A read-through that is rehearsed for accuracy alone, at the cost of pace and expression, is optimising for half of one scale.

What is 语调自然,有变化 actually asking for?

Expressive variation, and the four bands are a ladder measured by how much of it is there: 有变化 at the top, down through 有适当的变化 and 偶尔有变化, to 没有变化 at the bottom. It is not asking whether the reading is merely correct.

Most reading-aloud practice treats the task as an accuracy exercise — say the right sounds, in the right order. That ladder says the rubric is not primarily testing that. A reading that is entirely accurate but delivered in one flat register, with no lift at a question, no fall at the end of a thought, sits on the 没有变化end of this strand regardless of how clean the pronunciation was — and, per the bands above, that also caps the overall mark, because the two strands move together.

This is a claim about what the syllabus rewards, not a claim about how any word or character should sound. Nothing on this page states a correct pronunciation, a beat count, or a preferred reading of a 多音字for these passages — there is no source for that, and an unsourced claim about language is one we leave out rather than assert.

What kind of passage comes up in 朗读短文?

In the recalled record, mostly narratives about a person — 6 of the 8 passages we could find, against 2 that are not. Most of the recalled 朗读短文 passages sit here: a person, a hard thing, and what it shows.

The recalled passages include a deaf marine biologist who kept pursuing her field, a young man who had been in trouble and became a physiotherapist at a care centre, and an employer who paid a substantial sum to bring her domestic helper’s children to Singapore for Christmas. The two passages outside that pattern are about consideration for cyclists and about cross-country running.

If that pattern holds, a passage built to argue a position or explain a process is practising a different register from what tends to come up. A story needs a reader who can shift pace at a turn and let a sentence land at the end — which is exactly what 语速、语调和流利度 is describing.

This is the thinnest evidence on this page. Every one of the 8 recalled passages rests on a single source, because people remember the question they had to answer about the video clip far better than the passage they read aloud minutes earlier. Treat this as a hint about register, not an established finding — and see the topics page for how every recalled theme on this site is sourced and tiered.

How much of the 10-minute preparation should go to the passage?

Less than it feels like it should. The same 10 minutes covers the video clip that the 40-mark 会话is built on — four times the marks of the 10-mark passage in front of it.

The syllabus is explicit that both may be gone through more than once: 考生在限定的时间内,可以多次默读短文和观看录像短片. Nothing forces a candidate to split the ten minutes evenly, and a passage of 10 marks read carefully once or twice does not usually improve much on a third or fourth pass — while a video clip watched again, with a different question in mind each time, is preparation for a task worth 40 marks.

The practical trade-off: reading aloud is the part that feels most drillable, because it is a fixed piece of text on the day. That is exactly why it tends to absorb more of the ten minutes than its 5% share of the subject earns it.

How is this different from PSLE's 朗读篇章?

Different name, and half the weight. PSLE’s 朗读篇章 is 20 marks, 10% of Chinese. Secondary’s 朗读短文 is 10 marks, 5%. The two terms are SEAB’s own and are not interchangeable.

Marks / share of Chinese20 / 10%10 / 5%
Share of the oral paper20 of 5010 of 50

The direction of the change matters more than the arithmetic. A family that carries its PSLE preparation habits forward, giving the passage the same share of attention it earned at 10%, is over-preparing for a component that now earns 5%— and, per the preparation question above, that habit reaches into the ten minutes on exam day too.

PSLE figures from the archived SEAB syllabus 0005 document.

Common questions

How many marks is 朗读短文 worth?
10 marks out of the 50-mark oral paper — 5% of the Chinese Language subject. It is one scale, not a pronunciation mark plus a fluency mark.
Can a very accurate reading and a very fluent reading both miss the top band?
Yes. 等级 1 (9–10) asks for accurate, clear sound and a natural pace with appropriate pauses together. A reading that nails one strand and not the other does not reach it — the descriptors move as a pair, not independently.
What is 语调自然,有变化 actually asking for?
Expressive variation in how the passage is read, not just correctness. The four bands step down by how much variation is there: 有变化, then 有适当的变化, then 偶尔有变化, then 没有变化 at the bottom. The rubric weights this as heavily as accuracy.
What kind of passage comes up in 朗读短文?
In the recalled record, mostly human-interest narratives about a person — someone who overcame something, or showed unexpected kindness — rather than expository or argumentative writing. This is the thinnest evidence we have and every recalled passage is single-sourced, so treat it as a hint about register, not a finding.
How much of the 10-minute preparation should go to the passage?
Less than it feels like it should. The same 10 minutes covers the video clip for 会话, which is worth 40 marks against the passage's 10 — four times as much. Time spent re-reading a passage that will not change much is time not spent on the clip.
Is 朗读短文 the same as PSLE's 朗读篇章?
No — different name, different weight. PSLE's 朗读篇章 is 20 marks, 10% of Chinese. Secondary's 朗读短文 is 10 marks, 5%. It halves, and the two names are not interchangeable.
