What are the common mistakes in the O-Level Chinese 会话?
Six habits that hold a fluent, correct answer in the middle band, each matched to the syllabus wording that names it.

In short
The O-Level Chinese 会话 mistakes that SEAB's own wording describes are rarely grammar errors: they are answers that stop after one reason, examples anyone could give, and ideas that only come out when the examiner asks. 附录C's 等级 3 wording names the short answer and the need for guidance (内容简单, 无法进一步扩展个人看法, 在引导下), while 等级 1, the top band, asks for 扩展个人看法,并举例说明 and 无需主考员的引导. The 会话 is worth 40 marks, marked on two equally weighted criteria.

How is the O-Level Chinese 会话 marked?
In the O-Level / SEC G3 Chinese oral (1160 / K320), the 会话 (conversation) is worth 40 marks, which is 20% of the whole subject. 附录C marks it on two criteria of equal weight: 个人意见和内容的组织 (your opinion and how you organise it) and 语文表达和流利度 (language and fluency). Each criterion has four bands, and K320 numbers them from the top: 等级 1 is the best band and 等级 4 the lowest, the opposite of the English oral's numbering. The full grid is on how the Chinese oral is marked, band by band.
A note on the word "common". No one publishes figures on how often each mistake happens in the real exam, and we have none. What this page does instead is take the 等级 3 and 等级 4 wording of 附录C, which describes what a middle or low answer does, set it beside the 等级 1 wording, and show what each gap looks like in an actual answer. The advice is our guidance, read against SEAB's wording; it is not SEAB's.
From the syllabus
“能根据话题进行讨论,扩展个人看法,并举例说明”
The 等级 1 line of 个人意见和内容的组织 on discussion: the top band discusses the topic, extends its personal view and illustrates it with examples. The 等级 3 line keeps the first clause and replaces the rest with 但是无法进一步扩展个人看法.
Mistake 1: why does stopping after one reason cap the answer?
Because 附录C's 等级 3 is defined by it. The middle band 能根据话题发表意见,内容简单 (gives an opinion, but the content is simple) and 无法进一步扩展个人看法 (cannot take the view further). An answer that states a position, gives one general reason and stops has done exactly what 等级 3 describes, however correct its Chinese.
The examples below come from our worked answers on a 等级 1 会话 answer beside a 等级 3 one. The questions are our own wording, written on themes that two independent recall sources agree were examined; they are not past exam questions.
The question
有人说,现在的新加坡人跟邻居的关系越来越疏远。请谈谈你的看法。
Our rendering: some people say Singaporeans are growing more distant from their neighbours. What do you think?
A weaker answer
我同意。现在很多人都很忙,回到家就关门,很少跟邻居说话。……所以我觉得现在的人跟邻居的关系比较疏远。
I agree. People are busy, shut the door when they get home and rarely talk to neighbours … so I think people are more distant from their neighbours now.
A stronger answer
我只同意一半。以前住甘榜,大家的门都是开着的;现在住组屋,门一关,可能连隔壁住的是谁都不知道。……不过我不认为新加坡人变得冷漠了。
I only half agree. In the kampong, doors were open; in a flat, you may not even know who lives next door … but I don't think Singaporeans have become indifferent.
What changed
- The weaker answer agrees, gives two causes, and ends by repeating the statement it was asked about. The view is stated but never tested.
- The stronger answer grants the true part, then disagrees with the rest and goes on to support that with an incident. In our view, conceding and then rebutting is the clearest way to show a view being extended rather than repeated.

Mistake 2: what is wrong with an example anyone could give?
It does not do the job 举例说明 (illustrating with an example) asks for. 附录C asks the top band to back its view with examples, and a generic sentence such as "we help each other" is a category, not an example. In our reading, what turns it into evidence is a who, a when and one detail that could only belong to the speaker.
The question
短片中的陈阿姨主动关心新搬来的邻居。你会像她一样主动跟邻居打交道吗?为什么?
Our rendering: in the clip, Auntie Tan reaches out to the new neighbours. Would you do the same? Why?
A weaker answer
有时候过年会送橘子给他们。他们人很好。
Sometimes at Chinese New Year we give them oranges. They are nice people. (In our middle-band worked answer, this reply came only after the examiner's follow-up, 'any experience of your own?'; see Mistake 3.)
A stronger answer
我家搬到现在的组屋时,隔壁的马来邻居第一天就过来教我们垃圾槽怎么用、附近哪个巴刹比较便宜。
When we moved into our flat, our Malay neighbours came over on the first day to show us the rubbish chute and which market nearby was cheaper.
What changed
- The weaker example ends on a feeling (他们人很好). It is true, but it is not evidence for anything.
- The stronger one has a person, a moment (the first day) and two specific details. It could only be this speaker's family, which is what makes it count as an example.

Mistake 3: does it matter if the examiner has to ask for more?
Yes: 附录C uses it to separate the bands. 等级 1 talks with the examiner 无需主考员的引导 (without needing the examiner's guidance); 等级 2 偶尔需要引导 (occasionally needs it); 等级 3 can only hold the conversation 在引导下 (with guidance); 等级 4 struggles even 在不断引导下 (with constant guidance). The same content, offered unprompted or extracted by three follow-up questions, does not sit in the same band.
In our middle-band worked answer, the personal example only arrives after the examiner asks 你自己有没有跟邻居打交道的经验? ("any experience of your own?"), and the reply is three short sentences. Our guidance: whatever a student would say after "why?" or "anything else?" belongs in the first answer. A useful home habit is to ask one open question and then stay silent, and see whether the reason and the example come without a nudge.
Mistake 4: why does answering a slightly different question hurt?
Because the discussion 附录C rewards is 根据话题 (on the topic set), and in our reading a statement question can turn on one word. An answer that responds to an easier, nearby question can be fluent and sensible and still never engage the point. In the worked example below, the statement is that older people cannot learn new technology so there is no need to 勉强 (force) them; the weaker answer argues that we should teach them, which nobody disputed, and never touches 勉强.
The question
有人说,年纪大的人学不会新科技,不必勉强他们。请谈谈你的看法。
Our rendering: some say older people cannot learn new technology, so there is no need to force them. What do you think?
A weaker answer
如果我们不教他们,他们就会跟不上时代,生活会很不方便。所以我们应该教他们。
If we don't teach them, they will fall behind and life will be inconvenient. So we should teach them.
A stronger answer
当然,我们不应该逼他们,可是不勉强,不等于不教。
Of course we shouldn't push them, but not forcing them is not the same as not teaching them.
What changed
- The stronger answer takes the statement's own key word and turns it, conceding the reasonable half (do not push people) before rejecting the rest.
- Our guidance: before answering a statement question, find the one word that makes it arguable and make sure the answer says something about that word.

Mistake 5: what does using the same sentence pattern cost?
It caps the language criterion's range. 附录C's 语文表达和流利度 asks 等级 1 for 用词丰富、适当,语句有变化 (rich, apt wording and varied sentences), and describes 等级 3 as 用词还算适当,语句有一点变化 (wording fair, sentences only a little varied). Our middle-band answers lean on one frame, 如果……就…… and 这样……就……, turn after turn. Nothing in them is wrong; there is simply not much range.
The top-band answers vary the shape of what they say rather than reaching for rarer words: a contrast between then and now, a concession followed by a 不过, a rhetorical question, a one-line conclusion. Variety in what a sentence is doing is the part a student can plan.
Are grammar mistakes the biggest problem?
Not according to the wording. In the 会话 grid, 语病 (grammatical faults) appears only once, in the 等级 4 language descriptor: 用词不太适当,语句简单,没有变化,有时还有语病. An answer with no errors at all can therefore still sit in 等级 3, held there by the content criterion. Our worked middle-band answers are written that way on purpose: every sentence is correct, and what holds them back is that they stop. Correct Chinese matters, but it is not what separates the middle band from the top.
From the syllabus
“用词不太适当,语句简单,没有变化,有时还有语病”
The 等级 4 line of 语文表达和流利度: the only place in the 会话 grid where 语病 (grammatical faults) is mentioned.
Mistake 6: why does a memorised speech go wrong?
Because the 会话 is a conversation built on the clip and the examiner's questions, and a prepared speech answers the question its writer expected. The syllabus describes the part this way: 考生针对所提供的录像短片,以及主考员的提问,跟主考员进行一段对话. Of the recalled questions whose wording survives, we read most as asking for an opinion on a social issue from a particular angle, which is the situation in which a memorised paragraph turns into Mistake 4. Our guidance: prepare positions, reasons and real examples for each theme, not paragraphs. The recalled themes are on the O-Level Chinese oral topics page.
From the syllabus
“考生针对所提供的录像短片,以及主考员的提问,跟主考员进行一段对话。”
The candidate holds a conversation with the examiner, based on the video clip provided and the examiner's questions.
What can a written page not show?
The sound of the answer. The 语文表达和流利度 criterion also covers 语音 and 语调 (the 等级 1 line is 语音准确,语调自然流利,说话清楚, and 等级 3 notes 说话有时会迟疑, sometimes hesitant). A transcript cannot show any of that, and this page gives no advice on how anything should sound. If that strand is the concern, it needs a listener: a teacher, or someone whose Chinese the family trusts.
How can a student check an answer for these mistakes?
Our self-check, one question per mistake. Record an answer, play it back, and ask:
- After the first reason, did the answer keep going, with a 不过 or another side?
- Is the example something only this student could say: a person, a place, a moment?
- Would anything have come out only if someone had asked "why?" or "anything else?"
- What is the key word of the question, and did the answer say something about it?
- Did most sentences have the same shape?
- Was this an answer to this question, or a paragraph prepared for the theme?
Common questions
Do grammar mistakes cost the most in the O-Level Chinese 会话?
附录C does not suggest so. 语病 is mentioned only in the 等级 4 language descriptor, and content is a separate criterion of equal weight. A fully correct answer that stops after one reason matches the 等级 3 content wording.
Is 等级 1 the best band or the worst?
The best. K320 numbers its bands from the top, so 等级 1 is the highest and 等级 4 the lowest. The English oral numbers its bands the other way.
Does a follow-up question from the examiner mean the answer was weak?
Not by itself; the 会话 is a conversation and the examiner asks questions throughout. What 附录C distinguishes is how much 引导 (guidance) a candidate needs in order to say more: none at 等级 1, occasional at 等级 2, needed at 等级 3.
Are the questions on this page real past exam questions?
No. SEAB publishes no past oral papers. The questions are our wording, on themes that two independent recall sources agree were examined, and the answers are our worked examples.
