What changes from the PSLE Chinese oral to the O-Level one?

The total stays the same. Almost everything inside it moves.

Updated 10 October 2026 · Exam facts checked against SEAB on 13 September 2026 · 6 min read

In short

The PSLE and O-Level / SEC G3 Chinese orals are both worth 50 marks and 25% of Chinese, and both use a video clip for the conversation. What moves is the split: reading aloud falls from 20 marks to 10 marks, and the conversation grows from 30 marks to 40 marks. The reading component is also renamed, from 朗读篇章 to 朗读短文.

How do the marks change from PSLE to O-Level?

The paper total does not change and the split does. Reading aloud halves; the conversation becomes four times the reading. Both figures come straight from the two SEAB syllabuses: PSLE Chinese Language (0005) and SEC G3 Chinese Language (K320, which replaces O-Level 1160 from 2027). The English oral changes in a different way; see from the PSLE English oral to the O-Level one.

Read the reading-aloud rows again. At PSLE the passage was 10% of the Chinese grade; at O-Level it is 5%. The conversation goes the other way, from 15% to 20%.

What stays the same?

  • The total. Both orals are 50 marks and 25% of the subject.
  • A video clip for the conversation. PSLE's conversation is held "根据录像短片" (based on a video clip); the O-Level's is held "针对所提供的录像短片" (on the video clip provided). The stimulus does not change from a picture to a video: both levels already use a 录像短片.
  • The preparation. Both syllabuses give a silent preparation in which the passage is read and the clip watched, and both allow you to do each more than once. See how to use the preparation time.
  • The order. Reading aloud is part one and the conversation part two at both levels.
  • The listening paper. 听力理解 is a separate component with its own time at both levels (both syllabuses file it under 试卷三 with the oral), worth 20 marks and 10% at O-Level, the same as the PSLE paper.

From the syllabus

“这份试卷包括朗读篇章、根据录像短片进行对话。”

PSLE 0005: this paper consists of reading a passage aloud and a conversation based on a video clip.

From the syllabus

“考生针对所提供的录像短片,以及主考员的提问,跟主考员进行一段对话。”

K320: candidates hold a conversation with the examiner on the video clip provided and the examiner's questions.

What is 朗读篇章 called at secondary?

朗读短文. SEAB gives no reason for the change; the two syllabuses simply use different names, and both are SEAB's. PSLE calls the component 朗读篇章; K320 calls it 朗读短文. Under both headings the task is described in the same words: 考生必须朗读一篇短文 (the candidate must read a short passage aloud). The practical consequence is for searching. Material filed under the PSLE name is PSLE material; secondary material uses 朗读短文.

K320 also says what kinds of passage are used: 日常生活篇章、评论和新闻等 (everyday-life passages, commentary, news and so on). The PSLE syllabus gives no comparable range, so this page cannot tell you from SEAB's documents whether the passages get harder, only what the secondary range is. The 朗读短文 guide covers what the descriptors ask for.

What does the O-Level syllabus publish that the PSLE one does not?

The marking descriptors. The PSLE Chinese syllabus gives the marks for each part and nothing on how they are awarded. K320 prints an appendix, 附录C, with four bands (等级) for each part, and the words that describe each band. 等级 1 is the top band. Unlike 0005, then, K320 lets a family read the band descriptions for themselves.

From the syllabus

“能根据话题进行讨论,扩展个人看法,并举例说明”

等级 1 for 个人意见和内容的组织: can discuss the topic, extend a personal view, and give examples to illustrate it.

SEAB syllabus K320 (G3 Chinese Language), 附录C, p.10

From the syllabus

“能跟主考员自然、流利地交谈,无需主考员的引导”

Also 等级 1: can talk with the examiner naturally and fluently, without needing the examiner to lead.

SEAB syllabus K320 (G3 Chinese Language), 附录C, p.10

The 会话 is marked on two criteria of equal weight: 个人意见和内容的组织 (personal opinion and the organisation of content) and 语文表达和流利度 (language use and fluency). Half of the conversation is therefore about having a view and developing it. The full grid is on how the O-Level Chinese oral is marked, band by band.

What does the shift mean for how a Secondary 1 student practises?

Our guidance, not SEAB's: move the weight of practice to the conversation. In our view, reading aloud can feel like the easiest part to drill because the passage is fixed text, but at O-Level it is worth 10 marks, and the conversation is worth 40 marks.

In our reading, the habit to build is the one 附录C describes at the top: an answer that goes on without the examiner leading it. Its 等级 3 description of the content criterion includes 在引导下,才能跟主考员进行交谈 (can only keep the conversation going when led). An answer that gives one reason and stops, so that the examiner has to ask "why?" or "anything else?", is in our reading the pattern that description fits. Our guide to practising at home sets out a routine built on 附录C's wording.

What if your child took Higher Chinese at PSLE?

PSLE Higher Chinese (0015) has no oral paper. At secondary, Higher Chinese (K355) does: a short oral report on a video clip followed by a discussion, worth 40 marks and 20% of the subject. A student who took Higher Chinese at PSLE has never sat a Higher Chinese oral before. See the Higher Chinese oral.

Common questions

Is the O-Level Chinese oral worth more than the PSLE one?

No. Both are 50 marks and 25% of Chinese. The split changes: reading aloud goes from 20 marks to 10 marks and the conversation from 30 marks to 40 marks.

Does the PSLE Chinese oral use a picture and the O-Level a video?

No. Both use a video clip (录像短片) for the conversation; the PSLE 0005 and K320 syllabuses each say so. The secondary Chinese oral that uses a picture is Chinese (Special Programme), K364.

What is the difference between 朗读篇章 and 朗读短文?

They are SEAB's names for the same task at two levels: 朗读篇章 at PSLE, 朗读短文 at secondary. Both syllabuses describe it as reading a short passage aloud.

Does SEAB publish marking descriptors for the PSLE Chinese oral?

The PSLE syllabus gives marks for each part but no band descriptors. The secondary K320 syllabus prints them in 附录C, which is why the secondary oral can be practised against SEAB's own wording.
