How can you practise the O-Level Chinese oral at home?

Use SEAB's descriptors as the checklist. Check what can be checked at home, and leave the sound to someone who can hear it.

In short

Practise against SEAB's own descriptors in 附录C of the K320 syllabus, and spend most of the time on the 40 marks conversation rather than the 10 marks passage. A parent can check the conversation's content criterion at home, even without strong Chinese: was there a view, an example, and did the answer keep going without being prompted? How something should sound is not something a written guide can teach, so this one does not try.

What should home practice be measured against?

Against 附录C, the appendix of the K320 syllabus that prints what each band (等级) looks like. It is the closest thing a family has to the examiner's sheet, and it is short. The oral is worth 50 marks, 25% of Chinese, split between 朗读短文 (reading aloud) at 10 marks and 会话 (conversation) at 40 marks. Our guidance follows the marks: most sessions should be conversation.

The full descriptors, band by band, are on how the O-Level Chinese oral is marked. This page uses them as a checklist.

How do you practise 朗读短文 at home?

Start with the right material. K320 says the passages are 日常生活篇章、评论和新闻等 (everyday-life passages, commentary, news and so on), so in our view a short news report or opinion piece from a Singapore Chinese newspaper is closer to that range than a storybook. Then copy the exam's order: read the passage silently first, as in the preparation, then read it aloud once and record it.

What the reading is marked on is printed in 附录C as two strands of one scale. These are SEAB's words for the top band, 等级 1:

From the syllabus

“语音准确;语音清晰”

语音和清晰度 (sound and clarity), 等级 1: accurate sounds; clear sounds.

SEAB syllabus K320 (G3 Chinese Language), 附录C, p.9

From the syllabus

“语速适中,有节奏感;语调自然,有变化;流利连贯,停顿适当”

语速、语调和流利度 (pace, intonation and fluency), 等级 1: moderate pace with rhythm; natural, varied intonation; fluent and connected, with appropriate pauses.

SEAB syllabus K320 (G3 Chinese Language), 附录C, p.9

What a parent can do without judging sound: follow the printed passage while listening to the recording, and mark every place where the reading stopped and restarted, and every character that was skipped or added. 附录C's lowest band includes 一再停顿 (repeated stopping), so stops are worth counting. Take the marked characters to the teacher. For more on what the descriptors ask, see the 朗读短文 guide.

How do you practise the 会话 at home?

Play the examiner. Pick a theme from the recalled O-Level 会话 topics, and ask three questions on it in Chinese: one about the student's own response, one asking for suggestions, and one asking for a view on a statement. That run matches the shape the 2025 questions were recalled in; the kinds of question are set out in 会话 question types. Record the whole exchange.

  1. Ask the question and then say nothing. Do not help, rephrase or nod them along.
  2. When the answer stops, use one short, neutral prompt such as 为什么? (why?), 还有呢? (anything else?) or 可以举个例子吗? (can you give an example?).
  3. Count the prompts. Every prompt is a place where the answer needed leading.
  4. Afterwards, play back one answer and go through the self-check below together.

Our suggestion: count the prompts. Of everything a parent can check at home, we think it maps most directly onto 附录C. The top band for the content criterion ends with 无需主考员的引导 (without needing the examiner to lead); the middle band includes 在引导下,才能跟主考员进行交谈 (can only keep the conversation going when led). In our reading, an answer that needs a prompt every time fits the second description. The aim, over weeks, is fewer prompts per answer.

From the syllabus

“能根据话题进行讨论,扩展个人看法,并举例说明”

个人意见和内容的组织, 等级 1: can discuss the topic, extend a personal view, and give examples to illustrate it.

SEAB syllabus K320 (G3 Chinese Language), 附录C, p.10

What should the student check after each answer?

These questions are adapted from our worked top-band answer. Each turns a line of 附录C into something a student can ask of their own recording:

  • 我有没有在第一句就说出自己的看法,而不是先重复主考员的问题? Did I give my view in the first sentence, instead of repeating the question?
  • 我的看法有没有进一步扩展——说了“为什么”,还说了“不过”或“另一方面”? Did my view go further: a reason, and then a "but" or an "on the other hand"?
  • 我举的例子有没有人物、地点和经过,还是谁都说得出来的例子? Did my example have a person, a place and what happened, or could anyone have said it?
  • 我说的内容有没有条理:先看法,再理由,然后例子,最后用一句话总结? Was it in order: view, reason, example, and a closing line?
  • 主考员如果不追问,我能不能自己把话说完整,说到一个自然的结尾? Without a follow-up question, could I have finished on my own, at a natural end?

All five are about the content criterion, which a transcript or a recording can show. The other 会话 criterion, 语文表达和流利度 (language use and fluency), also covers 语音 and 语调; as with the reading, that half is for a teacher's ear. To see what these questions look like answered well and answered thinly, read a 等级 1 会话 answer beside a 等级 3 one.

Can a parent who does not speak Chinese help?

Yes, with the content criterion. Read the three questions from a written list, count the prompts, and afterwards ask your child, in English, three things: what was your view, what was your reason, and what was your example? If any of the three is missing, so was that part of the answer. You do not need to judge the Chinese to notice that an answer gave a view and no example.

What does a weekly routine look like?

Our suggestion, not a SEAB requirement, weighted the way the marks are:

  • Two conversation sessions. One theme each, three questions, recorded, prompts counted, one answer self-checked.
  • One reading session. A short news or opinion passage: read silently, read aloud once, recorded, stops and skips marked.
  • Every few weeks, a comparison. Play an old conversation recording beside a new one on a similar theme. Fewer prompts is progress you can count without any expertise.
  • Regularly, a teacher's ear. Take a reading recording and a conversation recording to a Chinese teacher for the parts a home check cannot cover.

If the same student is also preparing the English oral, it has its own shape and its own routine: practising the O-Level English oral at home.

What should you avoid when practising at home?

Four habits we advise against (our guidance, framed against 附录C):

  • Memorising whole answers. The content criterion rewards 个人意见 (a personal view), and in our view a learned paragraph is unlikely to fit the key word of the question actually asked. Practise positions and real examples instead.
  • Spending most sessions on the passage. It is the smaller part of the paper.
  • Correcting sounds from a written guide, including this one. Leave that to someone who can hear the recording.
  • Inventing examples. Our view: a made-up story gives a student less to extend than something that happened.

Common questions

How should home practice be split between 朗读短文 and 会话?

We suggest weighting it by the marks: the 会话 is worth 40 marks and the 朗读短文 10 marks, so most sessions should be conversation. That is our guidance, not a SEAB rule.

Can I check my child's Chinese pronunciation at home?

This guide does not teach sounds in writing. A parent can mark where a reading stopped, restarted or skipped characters; how a character should sound is a question for a Chinese teacher or a fluent reader listening to the recording.

What should I listen for in my child's 会话 answers?

Whether there is a view, a reason and a real example, and whether the answer keeps going without being prompted. Those are the lines of 附录C's content criterion, 个人意见和内容的组织, that a home check can see.

Should my child memorise model answers for the Chinese oral?

We advise against it. 附录C rewards a personal view that is extended with an example, and a memorised answer rarely matches the question actually asked. Learn positions on themes and real examples from your own life.
